Amnesty x Chu (Banana Armour sticker)
Stickers are great for transmitting artwork, and I’ve yet to meet someone who didn’t want a sticker.
You may not have heard about the Arms Trade Treaty, or Amnesty. Amnesty campaign for global human rights, and the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) aims to lobby all the nations responsible for the trading of illegal arms, and regulate the illegal trading of small arms and munitions.
There’s a nice connection with Amnesty and graffiti art. Aside of the obvious self-broadcast and social commentary there’s also a more fundamental act, one of writing.
Sketches
This had to be a biro moment and from the start there had to remain some honesty in the look of the final print. I began by drawing a banana with militaristic overtones, attempting to chop off the end of the peeled fruit (which looked both like a ‘missile’ or bullet scenario & a order to cease). The peeled skin elements just wouldn’t make the fruit into a gun all of its own.
The barrel had to become more like a weapon than a fruit, so I just created the section in question and superimposed it by tracing (human brain v1.0), which you can see bottom right.
Fruity designs
I redesigned the Amnesty logo to include my name as a cheeky remix of Amnesty x Chu, quite discrete I think you’ll agree.
Banana Armour, really saying something
There’s a few designs around using the banana vs. gun device, my aim was to funk it up. I started to Google the logos of some fruit stickers from around the world. Collectors’ sites like this and this and especially this site were an inspiration to the colouring and positional aspects, try as I might to remove the obvious Fyffes or Chiquita branding bastardry.
How to get them
You can only get your hands on these from Amnesty shop at Boxpark (you can also grab them at the lovely foodies at Boxpark; Chop’d, Foxcroft & Ginger, Crussh or CyberCandy in exchange for one) I would like to see them out in the wild, educating people about the twisted nature of this regulatory nonsense.
