The 3D Stereoscopic Collection

Recently I enrolled on a  screen printing class at Jacknife prints in Bristol, and these experimental prints are the result. I attended with the sole purpose of getting my hands dirty and to teach myself a technique of stereoscopic, or 3D printing. You may be familiar with it from comics but I have an unhealthy appetite for creating artworks in red and blue. This particular design was already engineered with over 60 layers of depth so it was the prime candidate. I knew the desired optical results from previously using 6 colour digital lithography, I was aware of the requirement for a very pale cyan which has additional colouring properties.

Two Colour

This was supposed to be the only colour scheme in the edition yet I couldn’t resist trying others (see below). I have yet to formulate a scientifically precise way to produce and register the artwork, along with the temperature, colour weight and paper stretch variables in the mix. Until then I have managed to make something that works, but there is so much room for improvement, especially as I am printing them myself.

 

Three Colour

I created the third screen with the overlap of the first two, hoping to emphasise the ‘common plane’ for the dimension that is in line with the paper surface, and to exaggerate the remainder of the spectral overlay. What I was after is a staining effect, rather than painting.
